Student Internship Application Fall 2019
Please read through this entire application very carefully. Applications for the Executive Board will close Sunday, March 31st. Applications will close for interns Friday, April 5th. You will be contacted for an interview with Madeline, Hillel’s Student Life Coordinator during the week of April 8th-12th. Those accepted will be notified by Thursday, April 18th.
Eligibility: Anyone who is a current student at Arizona State University or a local community college during the Fall 2019 semester and can commit to all responsibilities outlined below.
Job Descriptions and Expectations: As leaders of Hillel, the interns represent Hillel by participating in large ASU events, Hillel fundraisers, high school youth group events, and other miscellaneous Hillel events when needed. There will be multiple chances to go above and beyond throughout the semester to take on unique leadership opportunities to gain skills and experience in several areas. Make sure to read the expectations and job descriptions for each position before you apply.
What do you get out of it?
ALL INTERNS hired for Fall 2019 positions will be expected to attend the Finals Breakfast on Wednesday, April 24th from 7:30pm-8:30pm to be announced to the community and to attend a training day on Friday, April 26th (Time TBD). Have a conflict with these times? We can discuss alternate options in your interview.

They also get a say in some of the big decisions about student life at Hillel! Are you looking for an opportunity to seriously grow as a leader/professional and WOW at your next interview???? Student President

Do you love Jewish ritual, prayer, and Shabbat? Do you have Jewish text knowledge and Jewish communal experiences that you can draw from to lead engaging and meaningful Jewish programs? The VP of Jewish life will oversee Shabbat strategy and work with the Shabbat Scholars to enhance Shabbat programming.

- Meet for at least 30 minutes with your staff supervisor

- Spearhead the planning of Fall Welcome Week- 4 summer planning calls
- Plan Fall 2019 Intern Retreat
- Role requires at least 5 hours per week

Student President
Are you a visionary? Do you want to help drive forward the growth of Jewish life on campus and be at the forefront of large-scale change and problem solving?
What you’ll do:
- Serve as an Ambassador first and foremost: having coffee with as many Jewish students on campus including interns and new students
- Utilize your social media and personal invites to help connect students to Jewish life opportunities at Hillel
- Be an advocate for the needs of your peers and communicate these to staff
- Support intern teams through planning intern bonding events and attending their events
- Send a weekly Hillel email
- Monitor Hillel’s OrgSync account and represent Hillel at campus-wide events like Welcome Week, New Student Fairs, Interfaith events, etc…
- Attend Hillel Staff Meetings 1x per month

- Run weekly meetings with your intern team
- Manage all of Hillel's social media accounts- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
- Determine , create, and execute marketing campaigns to promote events/initiatives
- Determine new and exciting campaigns to showcase what Hillel offers and connect with more students
- Review analytics weekly to understand our audience engagement
- Adapt communication strategy based on data analysis
What you’ll bring to the job:
- Excellent writing skills
- Social media savviness
- A vision for Hillel's communication strategy
- Organization
- Graphic design skills; proficient in at least Canva design software (preferred)
- Knowledge of data analytics (not required, but is a bonus!)
- A major or minor in Marketing/Advertising/Data (preferred but not required)
Vice President of Programming
Are you the convener of all your friends? Are you constantly bringing people together for fun events or hosting your own? The VP of Programming will plan and execute all of Hillel’s large-scale social programs!
What you’ll do:
- Plan Israel Week Blue and White Party, Casino Night, Finals Breakfast, plus 1 additional event of your choosing
- Find and coordinate with vendors for tables/seating, DJs, dance floors, photo booth, etc…
- Coordinate with VP of Marketing to promote events
- Coordinate and host flow of events
What you'll bring to the role:
- Experience working and coordinating with vendors (or willingness to learn)
- Outgoing personality who is able to command a room and host their own events
- Understanding of what events attract college students
- A keen eye for decoration of space
Vice President of Finance/Development

- Write funding applications through student government and grant programs
- Help Hillel and Jewnity secure $3000 or more in funding to support programming
- Create budget sheets in excel
- Write compelling program descriptions explaining the necessity of budget items
- Meet weekly with a team of 1-2 finance interns
What you’ll bring to the job:
- Knowledge of excel to create budgets for large-scale programs
- Excellent writing skills
- Patience to deal with outside vendors and student government
Vice President of Jewish Life
Do you love Jewish ritual, prayer, and Shabbat? Do you have Jewish text knowledge and Jewish communal experiences that you can draw from to lead engaging and meaningful Jewish programs? The VP of Jewish life will oversee Shabbat strategy and work with the Shabbat Scholars to enhance Shabbat programming.
What you’ll do?
- Lead monthly Shabbat scholars meetings
- Oversee Shabbat; coordinate student interns, plan themes, choose menus, coordinate set-up and clean-up
- Meet with the Rabbinic Intern to discuss Shabbat strategy
- Be a voice for students about their needs for Shabbat
- Spearhead creative initiatives to implement at Shabbat
- Attend at least 3 out of 4 Shabbats per month

Hillel Intern Teams
Shabbat Scholars (2-4 people)
If you are always the first one through the door on a Friday evening for Shabbat?Do you love Jewish ritual and prayer? Do you come to Shabbat almost every week and want to deepen your connection? Looking for an opportunity to learn more about the value and purpose of prayer? Got talent on any kind of instrument? Maybe you just love to sing and miss your choir days? Then this role if for you!
What you’ll do:
- Create inspiring content that will resonate with your peers through prayer services or sermons at Hillel Shabbat.
- Make the Hillel Shabbat dinner experience delightful through choosing decorations, planning food menus, leading rituals, and discussion topics.
- Create marketing materials to promote weekly theme
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for your peers attending Shabbat.
- Meet 2x per month (1 for Jewish learning, 1 for planning Shabbats).
- Host at least 2 Shabbats per month over the course of the semester including set-up and clean-up
- Take leadership in services or dinner or both!
Marketing Intern (2-3)
What you’ll do:
- Attend weekly meetings with the marketing team
- Create original video or social media content that will attract your peers and promote upcoming Hillel programs
- Work with your peers planning upcoming Hillel programs and coordinate the marketing plan
- Develop original strategies to “spread the word” around campus
- Assist the Shabbat Scholars with 2 Shabbats over the course of the semester
What you’ll bring to the job:
- Creativity
- Knowledge of the different audiences we reach through various platforms
- Passion for Jewish programming and a desire to grow Hillel’s audience and programs
- Graphic design, photography, or major/minor in marketing or communications (preferred, but not required)
What you’ll do:
- Help plan Hillel’s large-scale events like Casino Night, Finals Breakfast, Israel Week Blue and White Party.
- Help plan 1 additional program of your choosing
- Attend weekly meetings with the programming team
- Attend and assist the Shabbat team in 2 Shabbats over the course of the semester.
What you’ll bring to the job:
- Creativity
- A strong work ethic and willingness to do some of the behind-the-scenes work that gets the job done .
- Willingness to seek out feedback and input from your Hillel peers in program planning.
Israel Programming Intern (1-2)
Support Andrew, Israel Education Coordinator in creating Israel-related programs.
What you’ll do:
- Meet weekly with the Israel Programming Team
- Plan 3 Israel related programs including Israel Fest or another large scale Israel event
- Encourage other interns to incorporate Israel themes into their programs.
- Attend and assist the Shabbat team in 2 Shabbats over the course of the semester.
What you’ll do:
- Promote The Shmear Society weekly through clever posts in the Facebook group.
- Host The Shmear Society every week, paying particular attention to new students!
- Logistics: pack the cart with bagels from Hillel, set up, and clean-up.
What you’ll do:
- Manage all large-scale funding requests, invoices, and reimbursement process for funds requested through USG (Undergraduate Student Government)
- Secure $5000 or more in funding
- Knowledge of using excel to create a budget sheet
- Excellent communication skills for writing funding requests
- Organization and timeliness
- Major or minor in finance or business (preferred, but not required)
Entrepreneurial Positions
For those who are bursting with ideas, are social butterflies, and can be self-motivated!
DIY Interns (create-your-own internship)!! (Past positions have included mindfulness, interfaith, social action, Jewish adulting, data)
Do you have a passion for ________ [fill in the blank]??? Do you think your peers would be excited about this too? Let us know what gets you pumped and we’ll give you the support (1:1 mentorship) and resources (money, education, conference experiences) to make it happen!
What you’ll do:
- Before the semester begins, meet with a Hillel staff member whose interests align with yours to draft your own internship and determine measurable goals
- Meet 2 times per month with your chosen staff supervisor
- Execute a program, class, event, initiative,etc…. Whatever you choose!
- Communicate your events to the VP of Programming

- Drive and initiative to work on a project of your own- be self-motivated
Interfaith Team
- Support our current Interfaith Intern with programming and relationship-building with other faith organizations on campus
Fact Finders (Interfaith Israel Trip) Intern- Paid position!
What you’ll do:
- Meet weekly with the Israel Education Coordinator; this position is not part of a team
- Be responsible for building relationships with and recruiting trip participants from important campus communities through speaking at groups’ meetings, attending campus events, and taking student leaders on coffee dates. (this role is recruitment/community building focused NOT Israel programming)
- Help the Israel Education Coordinator organize pre- and post-trip programming for current and past participants
- This role is a full year May through May. Those who complete their goals will receive a stipend of $300.

ASU Hillel Ambassadors (A.K.A. the "friendly faces" of Hillel whose entire role is to make Jewish friends.)
If Hillel has impacted you in any way, this is your chance to give back to the community and help unaffiliated or new Jewish students connect to meaningful opportunities on campus through free coffee. You'll work alongside Mikayla to plan our first 6 weeks of programs to welcome new students and be a friendly face at many of these to meet our new students. By being an ambassador, you'll help freshmen adjust to campus and inspire other new students to feel like they have a place at Hillel!
This role is a full year May through May. Those who complete their goals will receive a stipend of $300.
What you’ll do:
- Attend a biweekly cohort meeting determined by students' schedules.
- Dedicate time in the summer for 3 group meetings with Mikayla and other staff to plan welcome back programs (can be via Skype).
- Attend 3 welcome back programs as a greeter.
- Build relationships with 50 uninvolved Jewish students on campus over the course of the year serving as a resource to meaningful opportunities.
- Strive to understand students' interests, passions, and aspirations - and connect them to opportunities that the students may find meaningful and engaging.
- Plan a series of programs that students want to come to! Past examples include: Shmear Society in the Res Halls, Challah Bake in the Res Halls, Holiday programming, Hillel Cares
- Take students out to coffee to chat about their interests using your very own coffee budget
Event Assistants
Don’t have time to commit to a weekly meeting and planning large scale events/initiatives, but still want to show your support for Hillel and meet other students? We always could use an extra hand around here with set-up, clean-up, attendance, decorations, and random other tasks! This is a flexible position- we’ll offer lots of opportunities and you can give what you can!
What you’ll bring to the job:
Positive energy Willingness to show up on the same day (sometimes volunteer at odd hours like late evening)
Interest in learning about the ins and outs of a non-profit and the behind-the-scenes of Hillel!
Attend 1 office hour each week for general building upkeep including cleaning, updating the refrigerator contents Perks? Still a part of intern bonding!
What you'll get:
- Volunteer hours
- Learn the ins and outs of Hillel that can help prepare you for a leadership role!
- Great role for incoming freshman and current sophomores who don't have a lot of free time!
- Invitations to ALL monthly intern bonding events
