While the world has changed dramatically since the last time we gathered for the high holidays at ASU’s Memorial Union -- one thing remains the same -- the Jewish New Year is ultimately about hope and transformation. It is time to reflect on the past year, to recommit to a more promising future, and to grieve that which we have lost. From our online services, holiday meals to go, and our socially distant gatherings we know that this year’s high holidays will feel different. And yet, our purpose remains the same-- to provide the ASU Jewish community with a much needed moment to step away from the chaos and uncertainty and into a sacred time that fosters friendship, community, hope and meaning. All ASU students and their family members, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to participate. No matter where you live we hope will join us as we welcome the New Year of 5781!
Let there be light: Virtual High Holiday Services
ASU Hillel is excited to announce our new partnership with Temple Emanuel of Tempe to offer live streaming services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rabbi Suzy Stone and Rabbi Dean Shapiro will co-lead four short, uplifting, musical services that will combine the most well-known high holiday prayers with the music you know and love from our camp-style shabbat services. Our services are pluralistic and egalitarian, and will include a good balance of Hebrew and English, along with a mixture of traditional prayers and modern melodies. While our service may be abbreviated for our new online platform, we encourage you to set aside time to meditate and pray at your own pace using the Reform Movement’s free online flipbook, which we will be using during the live stream service as well.
Let There Be Nosh: Holiday Meals To Go (SOLD OUT)
ASU Hillel will provide grab and go meals to students at no cost and to community members for a fee. Please register for your meals by noon on Monday, September 14th. We will also be providing New Year gift bags so that students can celebrate at home in style. Meal pick up will be available 3:00pm - 4:30pm on Erev Rosh Hashanah and Erev Yom Kippur at Hillel in Tempe and the Downtown campus near Taylor Place.
Let There be Renewal: Socially Distant Rituals to Bring in the New Year
We will provide opportunities for students to gather outdoors in small groups to hear the shofar, experience Tashlich at Tempe Town Lake, participate in online meditation and text studies, as well as, new ways to mark the end of Yom Kippur.
Download our shofar service here.
