Meet Our Staff
A self-identified coffee addict, Debbie can most likely be found in a local coffee shop chatting with students, staff or community members about why Judaism is amazing, inspiring and challenging. She welcomes conversations with students from all political and religious backgrounds and after completing SafeZone training, is recognized by Arizona State University as an Ally for the LGBTQIA community. Debbie previously served as the Associate Director for Hillel at the University of Pennsylvania, where she oversaw a multi-tiered engagement approach to Jewish life on campus and completed Weinberg ACCELERATE: Hillel’s Executive Training Program. Originally from the Boston area, Debbie holds a B.A. in psychology from Emory University and an M. A. in Higher Education Administration from New York University. Debbie lives in Phoenix, AZ with her husband Ben and enjoys supporting the local food movement (buying, cooking, and eating!), working out, exploring the Valley, and traveling.
Director of Engagement
Initially a Music Performance major, Jordan graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park with a degree in Jewish Studies. In the years following graduation, Jordan worked for Indiana University Hillel as an Engagement Associate , Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity as an Educational Leadership Consultant, and Ramah Outdoor Adventure as the Rosh Shira (Head of Music). Most recently, Jordan was on a music scholarship to continue his studies in Music Therapy at the University of Iowa.
One Shabbat, when leading services at the local synagogue in Iowa City, a light went off in Jordan’s head. He realized that his passion for connecting with others wasn’t specifically through music, but through Judaism. Bada bing, bada boom- Jordan moved to Phoenix to re-enter the Hillel world as the Director of Engagement at Arizona State University!
Jordan has a deep passion for music, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), random conversations, and pretty much anything that anyone else is excited to talk about!!
Rabbi Emeritus Barton Lee
Rabbi Barton Lee came to Hillel at ASU in 1972. He studied at Stanford, Hebrew University, and the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati where he earned a doctorate. A native of Texas who still celebrates Texas Independence day with students, he loves the desert, the Grand Canyon, ASU students, classical concerts, Israel, politics and sports. But most of all, Rabbi Lee loves ASU students, schmoozing with them, helping with problems, or studying Torah as it relates to our lives.
IACT/Israel Engagement Coordinator
Jessielyn is the IACT/Israel Engagement Coordinator, and she spends her time recruiting and facilitating Hillel's trips to Israel through Taglit-Birthright Israel. Through the IACT initiative Jessielyn hopes to inspire students to become more active and committed in their relationships to Israel and thus help transform their Jewish identity and connection to Israel.
Before graduating from Muhlenberg College in May 2014, she spent a large part of her childhood involved in her synagogue, NFTY, and Jewish summer camp. Before starting at ASU Jessielyn worked as an administrative assistant for the Juilliard School Drama Division and spent two summers on senior staff at Camp Daisy and Harry Stein.
Jessielyn was greatly impacted by the experiences she had on her own Birthright trip in college and is very much looking forward to sharing these same experiences with the students at ASU. It is because of Birthright and her trip leader that she decided to become a Jewish professional. She is so grateful for this opportunity!
During his time majoring in Film Production and Anthropology at Arizona State University, Jacob was involved with Hillel as a Student Leader and the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity as its Philanthropy Chairman and Treasurer.
He has directed and produced several short films and entered them in ASU film festivals. In addition to his work in film, he headed many philanthropic programs designed to appeal to college students and benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
While involved with Hillel, he planned student engagement events and recruited for Birthright. He travelled to Israel on Birthright himself during the winter of 2013.
Jacob grew up in the Valley of the Sun and has been involved in Jewish life since a very young age. His understanding of the Jewish community in the valley and experience as a Jewish student at Arizona State University has influenced his professional career. He is excited to meet new students and looks forward to many exciting days at Hillel!
Jacob enjoys playing, watching, and discussing all sports including basketball, baseball, football, and tennis. He has deep passions for Israel, Jewish studies, science, and reading.
